HICKORY - Wilson Eugene "Gene" Glaze, 78, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at Catawba Regional Hospice.
He was born November 20, 1939 in Gaston County to the late Woodrow and Flurida Ledford Glaze.
Gene was a graduate of Ashley High School, Gaston College and served in US Army 1963-1965. He retired after 30 years in Design Engineering at Duke Power Co., Charlotte, NC. Gene was a member of Olney Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, NC for 60 years. He served as Deacon, President of Men of the Church, and on many committees and projects.
Gene was past president of the Union Road Optimist Club, receiving the Optimist of the Year award on two occasions. His hobbies included working at his church, playing on the church softball team, working puzzles, fishing with grandchildren, and golfing with friends. He enjoyed helping others, vacationing with family, and spending time with grandchildren. Gene was greatly loved by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Grissom Glaze, children; Gene Glaze and wife Margaret of Hickory, NC; Julie Glaze Black and husband Keith of Stanley, NC; grandchildren, Madison Caroline and Jennings Black, Mary Caroline, Catherine and Wilson Glaze; sister, Orpha Glaze Ferguson; brothers, Donald Glaze, Dean Glaze and wife Kathy; In-laws, Shirley Hamilton, Judy Stewart and Nathan Jones; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, golfing buddies, neighbors and friends.
The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Julie Roberts and Lana Green for their five years of loving and dedicated care giving provided to Gene; to Dr. Shenoy and staff at WFBH; physicians and staff of Catawba Hospice House and Palliative Care staff.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, July 7th at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home. Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel with Reverend Bob Elliott III officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Catawba Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658; Catawba Valley Habitat, Post Office Box 9475, Hickory, NC 28603 or to charity of donor's choice.
