Wanda Brackett Conley
1929-2016
Gastonia – Ms. Wanda B. Conley, 86, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2016, after being surrounded by family who ushered her into Heaven by singing her favorite hymns.
She was born in Gastonia, N.C., on October 3, 1929, to the late Ross O. Brackett, Sr., and Lucy E. Brackett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers; Robert E. Brackett, Ross O. Brackett, Jr. and Reese D. Brackett, Sr.
Ms. Conley spent most of her adult life in Marion, Indiana, where she graduated from Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan) and met her husband, Roland Conley. She went on to teach High School English & Literature at Oak Hill High School in Converse, Indiana, for over 40 years. She loved the students and they loved her; and she even maintained friendships with a few of them for years after they graduated. At least two of Ms. Conley's nieces followed in her footsteps and became school teachers. Ms. Conley had a vacation home in North Myrtle Beach, SC, where she moved after retiring. She was a strong Christian and opened her home to a Wesleyan Pastor who wanted to establish a new church in the NMB area. The small Wesleyan congregation met in Ms. Conley's home for many months while seeking property of their own. Once they moved, she attended the church for as long as she was physically able. Ms. Conley will be missed by so many.
She is survived by her son, Robert M. Conley, and daughter, Ronda L. Conley, as well as Mrs. Conley's youngest brother, Roger W. Brackett, Sr. (Kathy), sister-in-law, Barbara Brackett and sisters, Sara B. Kelly and Mary B. Masters (Ed). Also left to cherish her memories are the many nieces and nephews that she always made feel so very special. Ms. Conley's youngest sister Mary and husband, Ed, have been her caregivers for the last five years. They will miss her precious, thankful spirit.
Family will receive friends on Monday, September 12th from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church, 208 South Church Street, Gastonia, North Carolina 28054. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church.
