Gastonia – Theda Christine "TC" Stevens, 78, passed away unexpectedly January 1, 2017, at Caromont Regional in Gastonia, NC.
She was a native of Dallas, NC, and daughter of the late Thad Huffman and Annabelle Carpenter Huffman.
While the family mourns her passing, they are comforted by knowing she is in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as well as family, friends and fellow believers who passed before her. Theda's life touched many in the community and she will be remembered fondly as an outgoing, engaging personality – someone who went from acquaintance to friend to those she met. She enjoyed reading, loved to learn, and loved spending time with family and friends, whether gathering for a holiday celebration or playing Scrabble and card games. She especially liked spending time in Kure Beach, often hosting summer vacations for her family.
Theda graduated from Dallas High School in 1957, having never missed a day of school while growing up. She lived throughout the country during her adult life, including Texas, Indiana, Montana, Arizona, Colorado and California, before settling back down in Gaston County. "TC" worked for the U.S. Census Bureau before starting a long career in real estate, working as an agent for Look Real Estate in Gastonia. She spent time as a member of Brookleigh Baptist Church and was active with Love Memorial Baptist Church, particularly with their youth programs.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence E. "Spike" Stevens, of Gastonia, four children, John Sturgill of Livermore, California, Chris Sturgill and his wife, Joanne, of Hayward, California, Gina Day and her husband, Brad, of Holden Beach, and Eric Sturgill and his wife, Wendi, of Smithfield, VA; two step children, Glenn Stevens of Lake Wylie, SC and Eric Stevens of Tacoma, WA She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Alton Huffman of Lincolnton, Linda Butler of Mount Holly, Rita Huffman of Gastonia, Charles Huffman of Clover, SC, and Steve Huffman of Dallas, NC. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, one step grandchild and one great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her sister, Florine Huffman.
Services will be held at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home in Gastonia, on January 7th with receiving of family and friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. and a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m.
