Dallas – The Reverend Roland Sanford Simmons, 93, went to his heavenly home on April 20, 2017 at Stanley Total Living Center.

He was born May 17, 1923 in Mt. Airy, NC to the late Ed and Bertie Rakes Simmons.

Roland served in the US Army from January 1943 to January 1946. He was a machine gunner in the 389th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion in New Guinea. He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with one bronze star, Philippine Liberation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal.

He served as Minister at Grays Creek Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, NC; Second Baptist Church in Great Falls, SC and Community Baptist Church in Dallas, NC. He retired from Community Baptist Church in 1986 after 23 years of dedicated service.

Roland is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Stella Goad Simmons; son, David S. Simmons and wife Cheryl of Virginia Beach, VA; daughter, Sharon Stowe and husband Greg of Stanley, NC; two daughter-in-laws, Emily C. Simmons and Janice A. Simmons both of Stanley, NC; two brothers, Lewis Simmons and wife Polly; Bruce Simmons and wife Kathleen. Eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Sanford L. Simmons and Charles E. Simmons.

Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, April 22nd from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Community Baptist Church, 823 Dallas Stanley Highway, Dallas, NC

Funeral service will be held Sunday, April 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at Community Baptist Church with Pastor Ken Gibson and grandson Chad Simmons officiating.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest Gardens, Mt. Holly, NC with Military Honors.

The Family extends heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Stanley Total Living Center for the great care given to Pop and their continued care for Mom.
