Belmont- James Robert Nichols, 90, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Towns County, GA on August 22, 1924 to the late David Elijah and Bessie Owens Nichols. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Aileen Farr Nichols; brothers, David Roy Nichols, Walter Ralph Nichols and Johnny Ray Nichols; sisters, Ora Denton, Margie Guffey, Lottie Daniel and Mae Rogers. Robert was born and raised in Tate City Georgia, which he was very proud of his heritage. He was a US Army veteran during World War II, receiving the 2 Purple Hearts and 4 bronze stars, a silver star and the French Fourragère and Croiz de Guerre with Palm; and after his years in service he worked as a truck driver until he retired. He later went to work for the Gaston County Recycling on South New Hope and worked there for over 26 years. He was a member of Catawba Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, raising beagle dogs, fishing and hunting. Robert was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished God, Family and Country!!

Survivors include his children Kenny Robert Nichols and wife Lynn of Gastonia. Daughter, Kay Nichols Ballard and husband Ron of Belmont; grandsons, Jason Murphy and wife Jeanann and Robert Hooper and fiancée Laney Guice; great grandchildren, Dillon, Alicia and Breeanna Murphy.

A service to celebrate his life will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 28th at Catawba Heights Baptist Church with Reverend Raymond Johns, Jr., officiating. Family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m., Saturday, June 27th at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Evergreen "A Quiet Place" with military honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be his family, Jason and Dillion Murphy, Robert Hooper, Jamie and Jody Farr, David Guffey. The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to his caregivers Kim Bell and Karen Novelli. Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2916 Union Road, Gastonia 704-864-5144 is serving the Family.
