Rachel Stevens Dean

January 31, 1932 — May 14, 2016

Gastonia - Rachel Stevens Dean, 84, passed away at Caromont Regional Medical Center on Saturday, May 14, 2016 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Murphy, NC and was the daughter of the late John and Mamie Stephens Stevens.

Mrs. Dean was a member of Temple Baptist Church for 25 years and is an active member of Loray Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and she was very involved with the Vietnamese Children's Mission for 8 years. She was a member of the Gaston History Association. She previously worked at Wix, Belmont Heritage and Carolina Cotton Classics.

The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Gary Schenk, Sr., Dr. Mark C. Heckel, Denise Watts, Nancy Stevens, her physical therapist, Kenetta Roberson and Connie Edwards for their special care and compassion for Mrs. Dean.

She is survived by her son, Michael R. Dean and wife Marilyn Pappas Dean; four sisters, Wilma Smith, Elizabeth Richardson and husband Kenneth, Juanita Peters of Ohio, Brenda Stevens of Ohio; three brothers, Max Stevens and wife Cora of Alabama, Grady Stevens and wife Cindy of South Carolina, Larry Stevens and wife Nancy of Gastonia; grandchildren, William (Billy) Michael Dean and wife Joyce, Evan T. Karagias and wife Jennifer, Jaclyn Flanders Justice and husband Jack, Chad, Ashley and Sean Powers; great grandchildren, Luke, Courtney, Zackary and Matthew Karagias, Jack Robert Justice.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 17th at Loray Baptist Church with Dr. Kent Cranford, Dr. Sean Stevens and Reverend Paul Le officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 18th at Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mamie Stephens Stevens, her husband of 56 years, Jack Dean; daughter, Sherry Renee Dean Flanders; grandson, Stephen Kyle Flanders; sisters, Willie Mae Kukler, Mary Lou Parson.
