Gastonia – Purnell Cunningham, 77, son of the late Bish Cunningham and Ancester Marshall Cunningham passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at his residence.
Purnell was born August 22, 1939 in Catawba County. He was a graduate of Central High School, Newton, NC. Purnell served 23 years in the United States Air Force retiring as TSGT. He was a former member of Coulters Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Newton, NC and now a member of Greater Mt. Hebron Baptist Church in Gastonia. He was a member of the American Legion. After his retirement, he worked at Walmart and Western Auto.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John W. Cunningham, James Curtis Cunningham, adopted brother, Purnell White, sisters, Ellaree Holloway and Connie Johnson; adopted sister Creola White.
Left to cherish his fond memories include his wife, Martha Goode Cunningham of the home, son, Purnell Cunningham, Jr. and wife of California; step-children, Robert Edward Knox (Rhonda) of Salisbury; Gwendolyn Smith (Herbert) of Gastonia; brothers, Bobby Cunningham of Maiden, NC and Cornell Cunningham and wife Annie of Jacksonville, NC; sisters, Mayola McMullen and Gracie Phillips of Maiden, NC; sister-in-laws, Daisy Hall of Gastonia and Lena Chapman of Lincolnton; brother-in-law, Allen Goode and wife Geraldine of Charlotte. Aunt Eula Robinson of Hickory, NC; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 26th Greater Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, 732 Mt. Hebron Church Road, Gastonia, NC 28054 with Reverend Antwonn J. Lynch and Deacon Clevester McNair officiating. Quiet Hour will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial to follow at Gaston Memorial Park with military honors
