Gastonia –Pauline Deaton Shields, 99 passed away peacefully on August 2nd with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Watauga County on November 7, 1917 to the late Creed and Minnie Ella Reinhardt Deaton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, William Thomas Shields and daughter, Judy Lewis; great-grandson, Chase Lewis; son-in-laws, Robert VanAntwerp and Don Lewis; brothers and sister, Ralph, James and Ray Deaton, Betty Ellington.
Pauline would always light up the room with her beautiful smile and happy heart! Pauline was the oldest member of Loray Baptist Church. She worked many years at Trenton Mills, Threads and later retiring from Carolina Mills. She enjoyed reading; but her favorite book was the Bible. Pauline had the most generous heart and enjoyed helping others. She loved cooking for her family and spending time with them. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister who will be greatly missed!
Left to cherish her memories includes her children, Becky VanAntwerp; Ralph Shields (Sheila) all of Gastonia and David Shields (Brooksie) of Kure Beach, NC; brother, Bill Deaton (Nancy) of Gastonia; Grandsons, Todd Lewis (Sherry), Brent Shields (Pam), Brian Shields, David Shields, Ricky Jordan, Scott Shields (Laura), Tom VanAntwerp (Val) and Bryan Lee (Karen); twenty-one great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren
Visitation for family and friends will be 10:00 -11:00 a.m., prior to the Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 5th in the Chapel of Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with Reverend Scott Shields officiating.
Interment will be at Hollywood Cemetery with the releasing of the doves.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons
