Nicole "Nikki" Matlock Johnston

Nikki Matlock Johnston (1971–2025) was a loving mother, wife, daughter, and friend to all who had the privilege of sharing life with her. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised by her parents, Richard and Rachel Matlock, alongside her wonderful sister and lifelong friend,

Dawne (Rob) Harris. Nikki attended Hillwood High School, and graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1989. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Nikki met her loving husband and lifelong companion, Thad Johnston, in the spring of 1991. The two married in 1993. After their marriage, Nicole completed her B.A. in art at the University of Memphis. She went on to have an illustrious career in interior design, which spanned across the state of North Carolina and extended overseas to Cork, Ireland. She graciously set aside her career upon the births of her two children, Thad Johnston Jr. and Ty Johnston, whom she loved unconditionally and completely.

In 2020, Nikki seamlessly took over the bookkeeping operations for her husband’s dental office. She played a crucial role in maintaining the business and was a key factor in the success of her husband’s practice. Nikki was known for her vibrant personality, kindness, and joyful spirit, always bringing humor and light to every room she entered. On the night of January 9, 2025, Nikki passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She faced her illness with remarkable strength and grace and was not in pain when she passed. In addition to the family members listed above, she is survived by her niece Gracie Harris, brother-in-law Kevin (Daisy) Johnston, sister-in-law Molly Johnston, nephew Ryan Brewer, and Amy (Jeremy) Cacho.

Per Nikki’s instruction a small private service will be held for the immediate family only, followed by a celebration of life to be announced at a later date
