Gastonia- Robert Nelson Simpson, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2015 at Carillon Assisted Living.

He was born in Gaston County, NC on December 1, 1928 to the late Mildred Nelson and Julia B Simpson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Roberta Auten Simpson, who died May 7, 2015 and a sister Katherine Barnes.

He was a loving husband and wonderful father and grandfather. Nelson was a faithful and supportive member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church for many years. He retired from Freightliner in tool maintenance and had also worked at Burlington Industries. Nelson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his son Robert "Robbie" Simpson, Jr. and wife Kathy of Gastonia;
Grandsons, Robert Chad Simpson of Gastonia and Michael Todd Simpson of New York;
and several nieces and nephews

Funeral service will be Thursday, June 18th 11:00 am at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Brown officiating.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 am prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Butch Bynum, Bill Griffin, Bob Hice, Kenneth Hinkle, Lee Lineberger and Richard Moten.

Interment will follow at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard.
