Gastonia – Michael Matyisin, 97, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2016 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born in Clifton, New Jersey on September 27, 1918 to the late Frank and Anna Skarupa Matyisin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 74 years, Catherine Taylor Matyisin; son, Michael James Matyisin; and grandson, Michael Joseph Matyisin

Michael and Catherine raised their family in New Jersey and later in life resided between North Carolina and Florida. Michael retired from South Florida Water Management. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, travel, shopping and wood working of any kind. One of his favorite pastimes later in life was playing Bingo. He was a jack of all trades who was talented and could fix anything and everything that was put before him! Michael will be remembered as a kind-hearted and generous man who always managed to see the best in others. He demonstrated his beliefs by example and taught by example; and his lessons are part of his legacy.

Survivors include his loving daughter Irene M. Purcell and companion Larry Mintz of Charlotte;
Grandchildren Glenn L. Sisk, Jr. and Kevin J. Matyisin; four great grandchildren
and a great-great granddaughter

Visitation for family and friends will be Monday, August 1st from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Christian Funeral Service will be held Monday, August 1st at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with Reverend Mr. John Weisenhorn officiating.

Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park, Masonic II section.
