Mary Ellen Hardin

Mary Ellen Hardin, 86, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024 at her residence with her loving family by her side. 

She was born in Gaston County on May 5, 1938 to the late J.B. and Margaret Hoffman. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Becky Hardin; daughter-in-law, Janice Hardin; siblings, Jerry Hoffman, Fred Hoffman, Joel Hoffman, Betty Poteat, Linda Savage, and Judy Hoffman; and her grandson, John Hardin. 

Mary enjoyed gardening in her front yard where she created beautiful landscapes that won yard of the year every year. She also enjoyed birdwatching and all things nature. She loved to sing and when she was younger she would sing in tent revivals. Her singing expressed her passion for praising the Lord. She loved her family and everyone she met. Mary was a kind woman that never turned anyone away and always showed loved to those around her. 

She is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, Allen Ray Hardin; children, Steve Hardin, Steve Hardin, Jr., and James Hardin; siblings, J.B. Hoffman, Jr. and Sylvia Roberts; and her grandchildren, Caleb, Nathan, Jacob, John, Kenzie, Destiny, and David. 

Family and friends will gather for visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Sunday November 3, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
