Martha Ellen Meeks
1928-2014
Gastonia- Martha Ellen Meeks, 86, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2014 at Belaire Health Care.
She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 5, 1928 to the late Ross and Martha Garner Holbrooks
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Rev. Ira Meeks; brothers, Glenn and Edward Holbrooks, and sister, Ruth Blalock.
Born Martha Ellen Holbrooks but to many she was Allene or Maw Maw Meeks. Maw Maw was the most loving and holy woman of God, putting Christ first in her life. She loved singing and reading her bible which she knew forwards and backwards. She wore her long hair in a bun and always had on a dress, or frock as she would call them. She seemed to never age, always looked the same year after year. Maw Maw worked in the Stanley Junior High School Cafeteria but that is not the only place her wonderful cooking was shared. Her family loved to get together and eat. Some of our favorites were her fried taters, banana pudding and the best homemade biscuits ever! Her grandchildren loved staying with her and did quite often. She would also babysit kids during the summer when not in school. A typical day with Maw Maw would be playing board games, the dot game and watching TV games shows, eating and playing outside or sitting on the porch. She had a gift for keeping us busy all day without leaving the house.
We will dearly miss our Maw Maw but are so proud that she has been reunited with her beloved husband that she lost many years ago. Her family and friends in Heaven will certainly know her big smile and soft hands when they see her there. She will walk again with them and rejoice in the Lord's presence, a gift that she so very well earned through her life here on earth. May her un-judging spirit and compassion be a lesson to all that knew her. Amen.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also." (Matthew 6-19-21)
