Mt. Holly – Marshall Wayne Griffin, 92 passed away on November 15, 2017 at Stanley Total Living Center.

He was born in Lancaster County, South Carolina on December 18, 1924.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Pauline Dowdle Griffin and a brother, Jack Griffin.

Wayne retired from Blythe Brothers Construction as a foreman. He was the oldest member of the Paw Creek VFW. Wayne was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WWII and was Carpenter's Mate 3rd Class Construction Battalion. He was with his crew and saw the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima.

Survivors include includes sons, Terry (Cindy) Barber of Mt. Holly; Steve (Sheila) Barber of Gastonia;
Four grandchildren, Richard, Melody, Rocky and Brian and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 18th prior to the Celebration of Life service at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Lawing officiating.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest Gardens, Mt. Holly with Military Honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy
