Gastonia – Margaret Viola Evans Powell, 90 passed away peacefully on June 14, 2021, at Courtland Terrace surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in York County, South Carolina on December 5, 1930, to the late Thomas and Lydia Arrowood Evans. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack McCelland Powell; her siblings, O.T., George, Albert, Lee, Mary, Mae, Irene, Frances, and Lucille.
Ms. Powell retired from Threads, Inc. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Dallas. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister; and enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. She also loved gardening and working in the yard with her husband Jack; together they took great pride in the care of many azaleas. They had many wonderful flowers and azaleas and were voted yard of the week by the Gaston Gazette. It was not uncommon for people to come by and admire their beautiful yard.
Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Powell Paysour, and husband David; her grandchildren, Dana Paysour Smith, and husband Dorian; Allison Paysour and husband Tommy Freeman; two great-grandchildren, Parker and Gavin Smith.
Visitation for family and friends will be 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 19th at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life Service will follow at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel with Pastor Caroll Flack and Pastor Billy Ervin officiating.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the loving staff at Courtland Terrace for standing in as "Family" to Margaret while COVID prevented them from being with her. The love and support from the staff and caregivers were much appreciated.
Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Matthew II section.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 301 West Main Street, Dallas, NC 28034.
