Linda Hidalgo Hite
1948- 2017

Gastonia – Linda Flor Hidalgo Hite, of Buckhannon, West Virginia, peacefully passed on January 26, 2017 in the presence of her loving husband of 46 years, Steven Hite. She was born October 12, 1948 in Beckley, WV, daughter of Manuel Hidalgo and Flor Santos Hidalgo. Her family emigrated from Peñarroya, Spain. Linda's connection with the Spanish language and culture served as the tapestry of her life.

As a young woman, after graduating from West Virginia University with a B.A. in Secondary Education, she became a Pan Am stewardess and flew the Central and South American routes. After marrying in 1970, she and her husband lived in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Following her husband's military service, they resided in Morgantown, WV where she taught Spanish for 3 years at St. Francis. She and Steven moved to Buckhannon, WV with their son Michael and later had a daughter, Courtney. After being a stay at home mother for a period of time, she returned to teaching until her retirement in 2011.
All family, friends and former students can attest that she was a master organizer. From timeline-precise photo albums to a meticulously labeled pantry, her talent for task completion and organization would give Martha Stewart a run for her money! She thoroughly enjoyed all topics regarding home improvement and interior design. It was her goal to make any space more visually pleasing, expressive and of course, neat!
Describing Linda as an avid reader would be an understatement, for she always had an extensive reading list. Not only did it continually shape her perspective and understanding of the world, but it brought her great pleasure. She had a knack for retelling books and would regularly share the latest reads with Steve and Courtney. From biographies, autobiographies, and historical pieces to fiction and non-fiction works, such as The Power of Habit, and The Tipping Point; she always had a good read in hand.

For 26 years as a Spanish teacher, she exemplified professionalism and personal integrity. Linda had high expectations for her students, as she instilled in them a sense of duty, a true sense of obligation to meet their own potential in life. Encouraging her students to look for opportunities to expand their minds, travel, volunteer, and study in other parts of the world, was one of the many ways she made lasting impacts. Various former students have careers that require extensive travel, and some of her best are now foreign language teachers and professors!
As a wife, mother and grandmother she was generous in every possible way. Linda was steady, predictable, considerate, regimented, resolute in beliefs, and most importantly, unwavering in her love. She also had a remarkable talent for listening and being present for her family and friends. She was Steve's and Courtney greatest counsel.

She is survived by her husband Steven Hite of Buckhannon, WV, her son Michael Hite & daughter-in-law Desi, grandchildren Alex & Florilinda Hite of Normandy Park, WA, daughter Courtney Hite, son-in-law Sandeep Vennam, and grandchildren Leela & Sai Suraj Hite Vennam of Gastonia, NC.
