Lela Mae D Campbell

Gastonia ' Lela Dunn Campbell, 92, of 800 Greenhaven Drive, Greensboro, formerly of Gastonia, passed away peacefully December 5, 2011 with her loving family by her side at Clapp's Nursing Center, Pleasant Garden, NC.
Ms. Campbell moved to Gastonia from Laurel Hill, NC after marrying Lester P. Campbell in 1945. She was a resident of Gastonia until 2003 before moving to Greensboro. Lela was born in Johns, NC (Scotland County), on February 3, 1919 to the late Charlie Murdock Dunn and Minnie Robinson Dunn. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years, Lester Campbell who died November 27, 1999; and her four sisters and five brothers.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1946. She worked in Gastonia as a teaching assistant at the church Through the Week School kindergarten for 10 years and as a sales associate at Lighting Inc for 30 years.
Since retirement in 1999, she enjoyed her family, her garden, and her church Circle. In the summer of 2003, after moving to Greensboro, she enjoyed being with family, her pets, and attending college football and basketball games.
She is survived by her son Colonel (retired) Ken Campbell and wife Barbara of Springfield, VA; daughters Gayle LeCroy of Durham, NC and Sharon Brown and husband Roy of Greensboro, NC; Grandchildren Heather White and husband Harold of Minnetonka, MN; Colleen Campbell and husband Ed Valio of Alexandria, VA; and Collin Campbell and wife Christy of Chesapeake, VA; and her great grandchild Elliot White.
The family will receive friends 6:00 until 8:00 pm Sunday, December 11, 2011 at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 11:00am, Monday, December 12, 2011 at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with Dr. James Westmoreland officiating. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Fountain 2A section.
