Kenneth D. Koontz
1927-2016
Gastonia – Kenny Koontz, 89, passed away at Covenant Village, Gastonia, NC on May 18, 2016 with his loving family by his side. He was born on April 14, 1927 in Wharton, OH, son of the late Ernest and Zelda (Reynolds) Koontz. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Opal Arndt and Carol Shelly; also Faith Koontz who died shortly after birth.
He is survived by his cherished wife of almost 66 years, Retta Janiece (Ward), whom he married on May 21, 1950, and his son, Bradley A. Koontz and wife Meg of Gastonia, NC. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Cheryl L. Huffman. Kenny considered his biggest blessing to be family. He is survived by six grandchildren: Nathan Huffman and wife Bethany, Jared Huffman, Sean Huffman, Tara (Koontz) Parsons and husband Jeremy, Adriane Koontz and husband Kris Pirmann, and Jacob Koontz and wife Isabelle Choi as well as five great-grandchildren: Christian, Virginia and Jameson Huffman, Aven and Adley Parsons.
Mr. Koontz lived a life he could be proud of. Orphaned at age six, he overcame adversity and was a self-made man. He served two years as Corporal in the Army at the end of WW II. He worked at Garwood Industries for 25 years and then served 21 years as Vice President and General Manager at Fabco, Inc. until retirement January 1, 1993 at age 65. Mr. Koontz and his wife spent 5 years in Mattoon, IL, 18 years on their farm in Wharton, OH and many years living in Findlay, OH. They were blessed to be able to have a home on Lake Erie where Kenny loved to fish. They also spent 20 years at their winter home in Cape Coral, FL. Along with fishing, Kenny enjoyed boating, pheasant hunting and wood working. He created many beautiful wood pieces that his family will cherish forever. Kenny himself wrote that he and Janiece have had a wonderful life together and are thankful to God for His loving care.
The family will receive friends in the Living Room at Covenant Village in Gastonia on Tuesday, May 24th from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, 205 West Sandusky St, Findlay OH, at 3:00 PM on Friday, May 27th, 2016. The family will receive friends from 1:30 - until 3:00 p.m., prior to the memorial service.
