Joseph Henry Harris, Jr.

Joseph Henry Harris, Jr., Retired MSGT,  was born on January 21, 1935, in Northampton, North Carolina. He passed away on February 4, 2025, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in North Carolina, surrounded by his beloved family. Joseph was a decorated veteran, having dedicated 26 years of service to the United States Army, where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. During his military career, he served two tours in Vietnam and earned numerous accolades including the Bronze Star, two Maritime Service awards, an Army Commendation, eight Good Conduct Medals, a Korean Service award, and a Vietnam Service Ribbon with a Silver Star. His commitment and contributions to the Army have left a lasting legacy of honor and service.He also served as Commander of the VFW and American Legion.

After retiring from military service, Joseph transitioned to a career in the transmission industry, serving as a service manager for Aamco Transmission Co. in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also lent his skills to Cottman Transmission and Corey Transmission in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Joe was deeply involved in his community, exemplifying a commitment to veterans' affairs as a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.), and the American Legion Post 23. He notably served as a two-time past commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and played a crucial role in establishing the Gaston County Honor Guard in 2011, where he took on the role of Commander, overseeing this important organization that honors military veterans.

Family was the cornerstone of Joe's life. He is survived by his beloved children, Melissa Fancher (Randall), Melanie Dyer (Richard), Joseph H. Harris, III (Pamela), and Mark Harris. He also leaves behind his sister, Madge Thorpe, and brother, Walter T. Harris (Melinda). Joe was a proud grandfather of ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who were among his greatest joys.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Henry Harris, Sr. and Mary Eugenus Hyde Harris, his grandson, Mark Harris II and a great grandson, Benjamin Lawniczak,II and five sisters: Odell Edwards, Brownell Drewett, Helen Irvin, Laura Harlan, and Joyce Erickson; and a brother, Charles Harris.

In commemorating Joe's life, his family reflects on the many cherished memories created together, particularly highlighting the joy of his 90th birthday party celebrated at Southminster Church with his many friends and family.

A visitation will be held at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Monday, February 10, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Celebration of Life service will take place at Southminster Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, beginning at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Dan Oedy officiating,  followed by interment at Gaston Memorial Park with full military honors by the U.S. Army and the Gaston County Honor Guard.

Joseph Henry Harris, Jr. will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his country, his cherished family, and his many contributions to his community. He leaves behind a legacy that reflects a life well-lived, marked by service, love, and a commitment to the ideals he held dear.
