Gastonia- John Henry Smith, Sr., 93 , passed away peacefully March 8, 2015 surrounded by his loving family at CaroMont Regional Medical Center
John was born in Tellico Plains, Tennessee on November 6, to the late James Nelson and Violet Shaw Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 48 years, Lois Bost Smith, son John Henry Smith, Jr., infant son Benny Joel Smith, grandson Eric Phillips, brother George Nelson Smith and a sister Myrtle Hawkins.
He was the owner and operator of Johnny's Garage and Wrecker Service. John was a member of Fraley Memorial Baptist Church. He was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed carpentry, building and fixing many things, and most of all telling war stories. He also served in U.S. Navy and
Merchant Marines
Survivors include his loving family, daughter Donna Griffin and husband Jody of Gastonia, Tanya Cloer and husband Garland of Statesville;
Grandchildren, Lee Griffin and wife Jessica, Deany Phillips and wife Jenny, John Smith, III and wife Cynthia, Leslie Knupp and husband Eric;
great grandchildren, Brooke, Macy, Hannah, Miles, Jolie, Tiffany, Courtney, Karmyn, and Blake and a great great grandchild Jada
Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, March 11th at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with Reverend Ken Faulkenberry officiating.
Visitation for family and friends will be 1 hr prior to the service
Interment will follow at Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Gaston County Honor Guard
