John "J.W" Walter Helms

Gastonia – John Walter "J.W." Helms, Sr., 81 – went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 14, at The Ivy Rehab - Gastonia.
He was born in Rowan County, NC on August 2, 1940 to the late Robert Jack and Josephine Lathan Helms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by him wife Cecily Helms and 2nd wife Mary Lou; brother Lewis Helms.
He was a graduate of Bessemer City High School. He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church, where he was active with Men of the church. Founder of Faith on Wheels Motorcycle Ministry. He is a retired member of Union Road Volunteer Fire Department. He drove over the road long haul for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his sons John Walter Helms Jr. and Teri of Gastonia; James Leonard Helms of Gastonia; sisters Sarah Marr and husband Dewitt of Clover, SC and Betty Jo Agerlon and husband Thomas of Gastonia; grandchildren Jennifer Burris and Husband Patrick of Gastonia; Laurel Brittney Tallman and husband Mike of Hickory. Jeremy Helms and Ryan Helms of Gastonia. 2 great granddaughters; A number of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be at Union Presbyterian Church, 5615 Union Rd Gastonia, NC 28056, on Saturday February 19, at 1:00 pm with a visitation 1 hour prior to the service with Pastor James Holeman officiating.
Entombment will be at Union Presbyterian Church – Columbarium
