Gastonia – John Ray Braswell, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2018 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Union County on October 5, 1927.

John, a retired Accountant and Corporate Controller was a native of Wingate, NC. He was the son of the late J. Ray, Sr., and Kate H. Braswell. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Bisanar and his sister, Doris B. Holt. He was a graduate of Wingate College, Catawba College, and The University of South Carolina. A Korean War Veteran, where he served in both Japan and Korea. He was an avid reader, especially poetry and enjoyed wood working. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him!

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Tucker Braswell; son, John Ray Braswell, III (Jayne); daughters, Jeanne B. Smith (Donnie) and Lori B. Bryant; grandchildren, Brandy Cathey (Brian); Rebecca Bisanar; Stephen Holmes (Samantha) and Sheltyn Lynn (James) and 10 great grandchildren

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 23rd at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with the Celebration of life service at 2:00 p.m., to follow in the Chapel at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with Dr. Warner Doles officiating.

Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Garden of Honor D section with Military honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
