Dallas – Joe Robert Lay, 78, of Dallas passed away peacefully on March 10, 2014 surrounded by his family at the Robin Johnson House.
Joe was born in Gaston County, July 27, 1935 to the late Howard W. and Rachel Putnam Lay.
Joe retired from the Town of Dallas where he worked in street maintenance for many years. He was a member of the Dallas Volunteer Fire Department with 30 years of dedicated service.
Joe was a member of Long Creek Memorial Baptist Church.

He was a wonderful person and a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and step father. He will be greatly missed by his family and all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Katherine Lay.

He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Donna Barton Lay;
Sons, John Lay and wife Rebecca; Greg Lay and wife, Debbie
Stepson, Stephen Dunn and Step daughter Denise Dunn
Brother, Leon Lay and wife, Elaine
Half brother, Gary Putnam
Sister, Kay Cash
Grandsons, Steven Rhyne, Justin Lay and wife Amber; Joseph Lay and Jacob Lay
Great Grandson, Preston Rhyne
Step Grandchildren Landon Dunn, Tristan Dunn and Dakota Diaz

The family would like to offer their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Weerakoon and staff, Dr. Lia Spina and staff, Gaston Hematology and Oncology as well as Dr. Michael Case and Staff of Robin Johnson House.

Visitation will be 4:30 -6:00 pm Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Long Creek Memorial Baptist Church, Dallas with a Memorial Service following at 6:00 p.m. with Reverend Charles Ledford and Reverend Jim Shaw officiating.
