Mt. Holly – Jerry Wayne Stamey, 77, passed away July 7, 2022, at Novant Presbyterian Hospital surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Catawba County on April 3,1945 to the late John Stamey and Jessie Anderson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Judy McKee and Diane Phillips.
Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War with valor from 1965 to 1967. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, RVN Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
Jerry worked in textiles most of his life before retiring. He was an avid gardener and loved sharing his garden with friends and family. He loved animals and nature, making sure the birds were fed daily. Jerry was a loving husband, dad, pawpaw and dear friend to so many. His positive outlook made everyone smile.
Left to cherish Jerry’s memory is his loving wife of 54 years, Margaret Price Stamey; his daughters, Tonya Stamey Lucas, Lynn Stamey Dalton and husband Bill who he considered a son, Chrissy Ann Stamey and fiancée Tony Curtis; grandchildren, Cierra Stamey-Lucas and husband Dominic Mongillo, Kalib Smith and wife, Kiersten, Kelsey Huffman and husband Jon, Sydney Robinson and husband Tyler; great grandchildren, Zeek Chapman, Autumn Chapman, Raelynn Huffman and Evelyn Robinson; sister, Darlene Jordan; and many nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends he considered family. And his sweet dog, Gus.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 15, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life service to follow in the Chapel at 6:00p.m. with Pastor Jerry Willard officiating with Military Honors by the Gaston County Honor Guards.
His family would like to thank the kind caregivers at the VA Health Center in both Charlotte and Salisbury. You made him smile almost daily.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of Jerry’s favorite charities: Paralized Veterans of America, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Joseph’s Indian School, Boys Town and St. Labre Indian School.
