Gastonia-Jerry Max Smith, Sr., 77 of Gastonia passed away peacefully July 14, 2013 at the Robin Johnson House.
He was a native of Gaston County, born October 17, 1935 to the late
Debro Wilkins Smith and Hattie Newman Smith.

Max was a loving father and grandfather. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church, and was a U.S. Marines veteran. Max was an avid golfer, having three holes in one within 7 months at the Gaston Municipal Golf Course. While in school he loved playing basketball and baseball, where he was well known for his left-handed curve ball. He was also an avid
UNC Tar Heel fan.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Patsy Rabb Smith who died December 16, 2012 and a brother Verlus "Bub" Smith.

Survivors include his children, Jerry Max Smith, Jr and wife Blair Styers Smith; Timothy Morrison Smith and wife Michelle Johnson Smith;
Jeanne Smith Abernathy and husband Todd Abernathy;
Grandchildren, Kaitlyn , Kirklin, Zion and Sylas Smith, Autumn, Erin and Ashlyn Abernathy

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00pm Wednesday at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 am, Thursday at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Rex Atkins officiating.
Interment will be private.
Pallbearers will be Danny Harvell, Larry McBee, Bobby Eldridge, Bill Grant and Matt Grant
