James "Jim" Lewis Saunders, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his residence, surrounded by the love of his family, on January 20, 2025. Born on September 25, 1935, in Gaston County, North Carolina, Jim lived a life marked by kindness, sweetness, and a deep commitment to those he cherished.
Jim dedicated many years of his life to the Postal Service, where his hard work and unwavering dedication were a testament to his character. His proudest accomplishments included not only his dedication to serving his country as a medic in the U.S. Navy for four years but also his role as a loving and devoted husband for over 65 years. His marriage to Doris "Dot" Harvey Saunders, who he lovingly called wife until her passing in 2020, was a central part of his life and a source of immense joy.
Throughout his journey, Jim created lasting memories with his family. He found true happiness in spending time together, whether it was embarking on exciting cruises or enjoying day trips filled with laughter and love. An avid coin collector, he shared his passion for travel with his family, making every moment spent together a treasured memory.
Jim's legacy lives on through his son, James L Saunders, Jr (Amy), and daughter, Denise Saunders Cantrell. He took immense pride in his wonderful grandchildren: Sara Cantrell Morris (Daniel), Trey Cantrell, Mary Helen Saunders Otte (Kyle), Ruthie Saunders, Lewis (Carlin) Saunders, Jackson (Misa) Saunders, Jesse (Emma) Saunders Each one of them carried a piece of his heart, and he delighted in their achievements and growth. He also cherished his great-grandchildren, Addison Morris and Cora Cantrell, who brought even more joy into his life.
Jim was known as the kindest and sweetest person anyone could meet. His warm spirit and loving nature touched the lives of everyone around him. He leaves behind a profound legacy that will continue to inspire his family and friends, reminding them of the value of love, dedication, and the joy of shared experiences.
Though Jim has departed from this world, the memories of his gentle smile, caring heart, and unwavering support will forever remain with those who knew him. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
