1935 - 2021
Gastonia – James "Jim" Harvey Guffey, age 85, passed away peacefully at home on Sept 2, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born in Chester County, SC on September 9, 1935, to the late Maude Guffey Peeler.
Jim was a 60-year active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a proud veteran of the US Air Force serving his Country from 1954 until 1957. He graduated from Ashley High School where he played basketball and baseball. He was a long-time employee with Akers Motor Lines where he played industrial softball. He was last employed with Yellow Freight Trucking. He was an avid sports fan. He umpired for local industrial softball for many years. Jim loved his NC State Wolfpack, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Celtics, and an avid golf fan of Arnold Palmer. His favorite movie was "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and he loved "The Duke" John Wayne. Most of all, he loved being a father, husband, and PaPaw who gave the best hugs one might ever receive.
He was a loving Husband of 63 years to Ruby Dellinger Guffey, Proud Father to Kathryn Young (Bruce), Karen Guffey (Paul King), Jimmy Guffey (Rachel), Keith Guffey (Leann), and Steve Guffey (Moni). Proud Papaw to Jon, Lynn, Paige, Preston, Patrick, Blake, Parker, Pierce, Erin, Nicholas, Logan, and Lydia and Proud Great Papaw to Austin, Landon, Blayden, Carter, Charlie, Emerie, Marlowe, Kole, Zeke, and Daniel. He was the most loyal and loving family man in every sense of the word.
Jim will also be missed by the many families around Hedgewood Circle, who he considered a loving part of his extended family. He asked that we share very special gratitude to the members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Gaston Hospice, family friends, and to his loving family whose support and love is appreciated more than words can express.
