Gene Rankin
1922-2016
Lowell - Eugene "Gene" Malcomb Rankin, 93, of Greenwich, Connecticut, formerly of Lowell, NC passed away at Greenwich Hospital on January 31, 2016.
He was a native of Lowell, North Carolina and was the son of the late Thomas P. Rankin, Sr. and Pearl Leonhardt Rankin. Gene was a Veteran of US Navy during World War II and retired as Lieutenant US Naval Reserve. He was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University and the Manhattan School of Music. Gene was a trained musician, a professional pianist accompanying Anna Russell, opera soprano and satirist, performing in New Zealand and Australia. He later retired as the Piano Teacher at Greenwich Country Day School. His passion was his Block Island home at Block Island, Rhode Island which was his second home. He would spend every summer at Block Island where he would also serve as a pianist for several churches in Greenwich.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Donnie Jane Young; Bruce Baker, Glenn Baker, Jr., John Baker, Lucille Turner, Terry Rankin and Betty Sue Smith.
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 23rd at Edgewood Cemetery in Lowell with Military Honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard.
