Dorothy "Dot" Rhyne Hovis

 Dallas – Dorothy “Dot” Rhyne Hovis, 89, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024 at Morningside Assisted Living surrounded by her children. 

She was born in Gaston County on April 29, 1935 to the late Quince Lamar Rhyne and Maude High Rhyne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Hovis, her son-in-law Scott Abernathy, and her siblings, Jake, Ralph, Blair, Phillip, Carroll, Lewis, Bill and Catherine Boggs Postell.  

Dot was a loving wife for 66 years to the late Claude A Hovis, beloved mother, grandmother and sister, and friend who will be greatly missed! She was a member of Plainview Baptist Church and faithful member of Hardin Baptist for over 55 years. Dot was dedicated to reading her Bible faithfully and serving the Lord during her lifetime. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, where she was very active. She enjoyed cutting grass, gospel music, family gatherings, cooking for her family. 

Left to cherish her memories includes her loving family, son, Pastor Mark Hovis and wife Tammy; daughter, Lisa Abernathy; grandchildren, Jon Mark (Amber) and Caroline Hovis; Anna (Steve) and Wesley Maxwell (Elizabeth); step great granddaughter Hayley McSwain;  Brother, Tom Rhyne; several wonderful nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Sunday at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home

Private Family Graveside will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 16, 2024 at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, 1982 Salem Church Road, Lincolnton, NC with Pastor Mark Hovis officiating.  Pallbearers will be Todd Rhyne, Joe Rhyne, Dennis Rhyne, Ralph Rhyne, Tommy Boggs, and Jeff Briggs

 Memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Morningside of Gastonia staff and Gaston Hospice for their wonderful care of Dot.
