Dallas – Dennis Alton Best, 68, passed away peacefully on April 26th at the Robin Johnson House. He was born in Gaston County on January 14, 1953, to the late Java May Best and Giles Lester Best, Jr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant brother, Reginald Kevin Best; grandparents, Jessie H. and Giles L. Best, Sr.; Katie Samuels May and William D. May.
Dennis, known by so many as "Buzzard" was a lifelong resident of Gaston County and a graduate of North Gaston High School. He was a member of Gaston Lodge #263. Dennis enjoyed playing horse-shoes and gathering with friends for a good card game any opportunity he had to do so. Although he was a private person, he cherished spending his time with his closest friends. Dennis took great pride in his jobs while working for Chris Stroupe, Rick Beaver, Gaston College Grounds Crew and R&R Powder Coating. He was a loving brother, uncle, and friend who will be greatly missed!
Survivors include his siblings, Sherry B. Cloninger and husband Roger; Darrell Best and wife Paula; and Anthony "Tony" Best and wife Terri; nieces, Dena Beaty (Jeff); Jessica Earl (Tyson); Julie B. Denton (Chad); and Amy Parker (Samantha); great-niece, Ashley Beaty; great-nephew, Zachary Beaty (Kalani) and great-great niece, Mila Beaty; numerous cousins as well as many special friends that he considered to be a part of his family.
The family will receive friends 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m., Saturday, May 1st at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home followed by a 5:00 p.m., Memorial Service to celebrate Dennis' life in the Chapel of Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Kanupp officiating. Private Interment will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the medical staff who extended care to Dennis at Caromont Regional Medical Center (Mount Holly and Gastonia facilities); Brian Center-Lincoln; Atrium Health-Lincoln as well as the remarkable staff of Robin Johnson House. We are forever grateful for your kindness and compassion provided to Dennis while he was in your care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice c/o Robin Johnson House, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054 and/or Puett United Methodist Church, 3009 Puetts Chapel Road, Dallas, NC 28034.
