Gastonia - Debra Michelle Thompson Mathews passed peacefully on April 23, 2018. Debra was born in Charlotte, NC, December 20, 1960, to Joseph E. Thompson and Patricia Snipes Thompson, who have both predeceased her. Debra's career spanned a decade in the airline Industry (Eastern Airlines) and real estate. Her accomplishments and contributions in her life were numerous.
Debra was an extraordinary woman. She was well read and articulate, she was silly, she put others first, she was loving, she was courageous and unafraid. She was true to herself and all that she believed in. She had a heart that was not only giving, but also ever forgiving. She was a champion of the downtrodden from an early age and touched many lives. She loved life, family, travel, people, books, antiques, and much more. But most importantly, she loved, cherished and treasured her beloved daughter, Audrey.
Through her many illnesses, Debra's faith remained solid, and her spirit strong. She never wavered in her hope for a better tomorrow or her love of family and friends. She remained positive, always with a delightful wit and sense of humor. She was indeed the Mary Poppins/Rain Man/Martha Stewart of her family. Although she has now gone on to do greater things, her smile, laughter, precious heart, love and charisma will never leave us. She will be missed by many.

Debra is survived by her loving daughter, Audrey Katherine Mathews, of Gastonia; her brother, Joe Thompson, of Fort Mill, SC; her "favorite" Aunt Sue Hunter and family; the Thompson and Snipes families; and many lifelong friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Monday April 30, 2018, at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home, 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
