David Leonard Thornburg

David Leonard “Butch” Thornburg, born on February 2, 1951, in Gaston County, passed away on February 9, 2025, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth and creativity that touched the hearts of all who knew him.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Butch dedicated his life to service and community. His career was as varied as it was vibrant; he was a jack of all trades who approached every endeavor with passion. For many years, he worked as a truck driver, traversing the roads and establishing connections across countless miles. In addition to his professional pursuits, Butch found joy in wood crafting, where his artistic spirit came alive, crafting pieces that not only showcased his skill but also his love for creativity.

Butch is survived by his devoted companion of many years, Darlene Childers, whose support and love were constants throughout his life. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Elaine Helms (Danny), Lisa Thornburg (Kelly Grigg), Crystal Johansen (Thomas), and Jennifer Goodson (Junior). The legacy he built extends to 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of his heart and memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Dub” Leonard Thornburg and Johnsie Mae Sellers Thornburg, who provided him with the strong values he carried throughout his life. He was also welcomed into eternal rest by his son, William David "Billy" Thornburg, who surely felt the void left by Billy’s passing.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Butch’s life during a visitation on February 15, 2025, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation in Gastonia, followed by a memorial service at 3:30 PM with Pastor Michael Coe officiating and with military honor by the Gaston County Honor Guard. Butch will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont

As we honor and remember Butch, we hold on to the vibrant memories he created, the countless lives he touched, and the love he so generously shared. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
