David Wastle Cannon, age 97, made his way "home" on Monday morning, February 25. Mr. Cannon had been lovingly cared for by his daughter, Glenda Cannon Doles and her husband, Dr. I. Warner Doles, III in their home here in Gastonia until he required skilled nursing care at Alexandria Place in September of 2012.David was born April 12, 1915 and was the last surviving child of 15 children born to Jacob and Annie Cannon. He was preceded in death in 2003 by his sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Pauline "Miss Polly" Cannon .David was blessed with a long, meaningful life and his garden and lawn were the envy of all his neighbors when he lived in Thomasville, North Carolina until he was no longer able to live alone. He spent the majority of his career as a fixer in the hosiery mills of High Point, NC where it was said of him "if David can't fix it… it cannot be fixed". He worked from sunup to sundown and was able to live independently until the age of 94.His days were made brighter by visits from Glenda and Warner, grandson Jason Brown and wife Kerrie Ann; his granddaughter Julie Freeman and husband Adam and his great-grandchildren Kyle and Gracie Brown and Allyson& Jocie Freeman. A very special thank you to the staff at Alexandria Place who lovingly called him "Paw Paw" and cared for him with compassion rarely seen by health care providers. At his request, there will be no formal service but a small family celebration of is life will be held on what would have been his 98thbirthday. He was always, as he said, "a one woman man" and is now reunited with his Polly and the Lord he served since the age of 26. Condolences may be made to the family at
