Cleo Screws, 87, of Belmont went to be with the Lord on May 9, 2015. Born August 18, 1927 in Wrightsville, Georgia. Son of the late Gaynor Lee & Sally Myrtle Cochrane Screws. He was a member of Grace Wesleyan Church and former member of Southside Baptist Church. He is a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS Orleck and USS Brinkley Bass. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by first wife Geneva Screws. Brothers: Billy, Grady, and Herschel Screws. Sisters: Mary Ann Screws & Willie Mae Hutchinson. Grandchildren: Blake Robinson and Matthew Evans. Graduated from Wrightsville High School and Georgia Technical College. He was employed by Public Service Company for 13 years and was owner/operator of Cleo's Heating & Cooling and Energy Equipment & Consultants for over 35 years. Cleo was a member of Dallas Optimist, Gastonia Rotary Club, Public Service Retirees Club, and Gaston Home Builders Association. As a member of the AM Optimist club, he served as president. Served as Lt. Governor of the NC Optimist West for a period of 2 years. The optimist clubs were his pride and joy. Also as a member of the YMCA, Cleo served as a Y-Pal for many years.Cleo is survived by his loving wife, Fran Screws of Belmont, daughters Gale Entler (Ernie), Toni Covington (Bill) and son Stephen Cleo Screws (Donna) of Gastonia. Step-sons Christopher Rouse, Jr. (Crystal), Kevin Rouse (Shannon), Kenneth Rouse, and Kent Rouse. Brother Benny Screws (Ronelda) and sisters Viola Bustos, Dorothy Whited, Rosa Brown (Louie), Glenda Gilleland (Phil) and sister-in-law Teresa Penn all of Georgia. Brother-in-law Frank Brayton (Marlene) of Gastonia. Grandchildren: David Screws, Cameron & Jacob Bolin, Jeff Evans, Whitney Snyder (JP), Abby Rouse, Wesley Rouse, Spencer Rouse, Kyle Rouse, Hunter Rouse, and Autumn Rouse all of Gastonia and Belmont. Great-Grandchildren: Landon & Aubrey Evans, Harrison Snyder. Cleo is also survived by his several nieces and nephews and secretary, Wilma Barnes. Memorial Service will be Wednesday, May 13th at 4:00 p.m., at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with Reverend John Stanley officiating with Military Honors provided by the Gaston County Honor Guard. Family will receive friends from 3-4 pm prior to the service.
