Gastonia – Charles "Charlie" Alvin Meares, 82, passed away November 25, 2015 at his home in Gastonia.

He was born November 14, 1933, a native of Robeson County, the son of the late Palmer and Effie Jane Kinlaw Meares.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ertle Ray Meares, Hilton Meares and his sisters, Kathleen Evans, Shirley Smith and Betty Inman.

Charlie loved his family and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of over 59 years, Juanita W. Meares; daughters, Lisa R. Weiss and husband, Richard Weiss of Davidson, and Wanda L. Rauch and her husband, Marc Rauch of Gastonia; grandchildren Jessica R. Trahan, Chason Trahan and his wife, Catherine, Brad Trahan, Zachary Love, Michael Love and Meredith Love;
and special sister-in-law, Faye and husband Leon Hovis of Dallas; and many nieces and nephews.

Charlie was an active and devoted member of Rankin Lake Baptist Church. He was involved with many mission trips in the U.S., as well as Guadeloupe, Brazil, Romania and Honduras.

He retired from the N.C. Department of Corrections in 1996 after 41 years of dedicated service. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Charlie was awarded The Order of the Longleaf Pine twice by Governor James Holshouser and Governor Jim Hunt. After retirement, he served as a volunteer with the Department of Corrections in Dallas, N.C. for 19 years.

His family thanks Dr. George Bell and his staff at CaroMont Health in Gastonia and Tarra Wilkinson, of Gaston Hospice.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 28th at Rankin Lake Baptist Church in Dallas, N.C. with Pastor Jim Loftis officiating. Military honors provided by the Gaston County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Interment will be private.
