Charles Vernon Hill
1947 -2016
Gastonia - Charles Vernon Hill, 68, passed away unexpectedly on April 30, 2016 at his residence. He was born in Gaston County on June 19, 1947 to Sadie Splawn Hill and the late Charles S. Hill, Jr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, and mother- in-law, James "Turk" Ghorley and Mary Parker Ghorley.
He retired from The Timken Company and was formerly employed by the Gaston County Sheriff's Department and Advance Auto Parts. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served in the Vietnam War and earned the Purple Heart. He loved gardening, watching sports on television, collectibles and antiques. . He adored and was adored by his grandchildren, especially watching them compete in sporting events. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son-in-law, and friend. Spending time with his in-laws brought him much pleasure. He was a devoted son and caregiver to his mother.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Rachel Ghorley Hill; his daughters, Kimberly Monica Hill Revels and husband Dion of Clover, South Carolina, and Misti LaShon Hill of Gastonia; his grandchildren, Cameron, Jillian and Logan Revels; his mother, Sadie Splawn Hill; a sister, Judy Hill Dockery of Gastonia, a brother, Charles S. Hill, III of Bessemer City.
Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, May 5th from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with Reverend Bobby Smith officiating.
Pallbearers will be Dion Revels, Tyler Ghorley, Freddie "Flip" Dow, Jim O'Brien, Jesse Parker, Frank Wingate, Wayne Johnson and Robbie Cline. Honorary Pallbearers, Cameron Revels and Donnie Coleman.
Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery with Military Honors by the Gaston County Sheriff's Honor Guard and The Gaston County Honor Guard.
