Charles "Charlie" Lee Smith, 81, of Gastonia, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 4, 2017 with his loving family by his side. Charlie was born in Gastonia and was the son of the late Norman Garnett and Grace Brown Smith.
Charlie was a graduate of Gastonia High School class of 1955. He was a graduate of Biscayne College with an Associate Degree in Business. He started his career as a Linotype Operator with the Gastonia Gazette and then the Charlotte Observer. He retired from Carolina Marking Devices, Charlotte.
Charlie was a veteran of the United States Army.
Charlie loved racing and was known as the "Cushion Man" at Carolina Speedway.
Charlie is a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he was a member of the Choir and former Choir Director and Deacon.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce McLamb Smith; two daughters, Sharon McSwain, Lori Rutherford and husband Brent of Gastonia; two sons, Michael Smith and wife Jamie of Hickory, Tim Smith and wife Tracy of Gastonia; 12 Grandchildren, Justin Smith, Josh Rutherford, Patrick Smith (Erin), Amanda Rutherford, Abbey Smith, Tyler McSwain, Emilee Warren (Matthew), Taylor McSwain, Trevor McSwain, Robert Rutherford, Hailey Smith, Tevin McSwain; 1 great grandson, Waylon Warren; nieces and nephews, Rhonda McLamb, Tanya Hunt, Jennifer Robbins, Jeff Smith.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8th at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Cloninger and Rev. Douglas Cooper officiating.
Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park with Military Honors by the North Carolina National Guard and the Gaston Honor Guard.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ravon Smith, Gerald Smith.
