Charlene Locklear Roper

Charlene Locklear Roper, 75, passed away peacefully at her home in Stanley on Sunday, December 18, 2022 with her loving family by her side.  She was born in Gaston County on July 20, 1947 and was the daughter of the late

Charlie D. Locklear, Sr. and Edith Smith  and was also preceded in death by her husband, Gary Roper; her daughter, Terri Lea Pope Robinson; brother, Charlie Locklear, Jr.; sister, Veronia Griffis.

Charlene attended South Gastonia Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.  She loved to watch games shows on TV.  Charlene was a very hard worker and worked in the Textile Plants as a spinner.  She enjoyed sitting on her porch watching the birds with her furbaby “Precious”.

She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She truly loved her family and will be missed by so many.

The family wishes to thank the Staff of Gaston Hospice and especially Cindy, Janet, Dora and Anita for their special love and care shown to Charlene.

Charlene is survived by three loving daughters, Lynn Clark and husband William “Bill”, Julie Paige Pope and fiancé, Garry Earney, Wendy Steele and husband Shannon; 1 brother, Hugh D. Locklear; 10 loving grandchildren (whom she adored with her 20 great grandchildren.

The family will receive family and friends from 2:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home, 2916 Union Road, Gastonia with A Celebration of Life Service to follow at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home. 

Pallbearers are Garry Earney, Shannon Steele, Joshua Setzer, Joseph Rhyne, Jose Pardo, Sammy Paysour; Honorary Pallbearers are Jacob Rhyne and J.J. Sexton.

Interment will follow at Westview Gardens, Bessemer City with the Releasing of the Doves.
