Gastonia - Mary "Catherine" Lane Welch, 81, was surrounded by her family at her home when she passed away on Tuesday, August 1st, after the long goodbye of Alzheimer's.
Catherine was born on December 27, 1935 to Samuel and Bessie Tanner Lane, their youngest and only daughter. She graduated from Gastonia High School in 1955 and married Bryson Welch soon after.
Married over 62 years, Catherine and Bryson were the epitome of true love. They first met at Calvary Baptist Church in Gastonia, where they later married, raised their three children, and where their children raised their own children.
Bryson held Catherine's hand until the day she passed, loved her through sickness and health, and remembered for her when she had forgotten.
Before Alzheimer's, Catherine was everyone's local "Avon lady," and could be seen most mornings at Hardee's picking up a gravy biscuit. She was always put together "like a lady" but enjoyed watching others cut up more than she'd ever admit.
As she lost her memories, she continued to be the sweetest, most loving "Nana," who always made sure everyone knew she loved them, even when she didn't know their name. She loved riding around town and taking care of her "baby" Lucy, a Pomeranian, who she'd always say was "quite a gal."
Catherine was reunited in heaven with her parents and five older brothers who meant the world to her, but left behind family who know one day we will meet the Catherine we once knew: husband, Bryson Welch; children, Kathy and Billy Glover, Phil and Cindy Welch, Sam and Kristy Welch; nieces Linda Lane, Risa Giovengo, and Kim Bonnin; grandchildren Jordan Paris, Casey Welch, Hannah and Vahid Sanii, Katie Welch, Jake Welch, Maddie Welch; and one "darlin'" great-granddaughter, Ava Paris.
The family would like to thank Senior TLC in Gastonia for walking with us through this journey and treating our Nana like their own with love, understanding, foresight, patience, and support.

Funeral service will be held at Calvary on Thursday, August 3rd at 3:00 pm with burial to follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
