Belmont – Hugh Alvin "Al" Culberson, 70 passed away peacefully on March 22, 2018 at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on July 2, 1947 and grew up in Dallas to the late Vernon and Hazel Baker Culberson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Sandra Matheson Culberson.

Al was a great athlete "known to many as a legend in his time" playing baseball, football and basketball; lettering in all three in high school. Alvin's athleticism allowed him to play softball up well into his forties; where he gained lots of friends and became known by many. Alvin graduated from Dallas High School and attended Belmont Abbey College and Gaston College. He was a veteran of the US Army. He retired from Standard Distributors in Ranlo, NC after 34 years of dedicated service.

Left to cherish his memories includes sons, Jon (Brandy) Culberson, Wes (Susanna) Culberson; step children, Jerrime (Katherine) Britton, Eley (Mizuho) Britton;
grandchildren, Brooke, Carrigan, Addison, Canaan and Bonnie Culberson, Jackson Payne, Blair and Zoe Culberson, Courtney, Kelsey and Spencer Britton; and a great granddaughter, Sophia;
brother, Milas (Elaine) Culberson, sisters, Eunice (Buddy) McConnell, Michelle Culberson Helms;
niece, Katie (Alan) Spearman, nephews, Jimmy (Hannah) Culberson, Brandon (Amanda) Williams, Mack (Amy) McConnell, Deven, Keegan and Corrin Dennis; and his best friend, Jewel Colvard

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 25th at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. Celebration of life service will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday in the Chapel at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home.

Interment will be at Evergreen A Quiet Place with Military honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard

Pallbearers will be Jewell Colvard, Toby Colvard, Brent Colvard, Alan Carpenter, John Rudisill and Mike Lineberger

Honorary Pallbearers will be Art Shoemaker, David "Train" Denton, Gary Lowe and Reggie Whitesides.
